Oregon Ducks Impress in a Big Way
Many people thought that the Ducks game against the #22 Arizona Wildcats would be their first true test of the season…….WRONG! The Ducks made short work of the Wildcats in a 49-0 drubbing that saw the Ducks hold just a 13-0 halftime lead. The thing to know about Oregon is that they can strike quickly. They managed to put up 13 points in the 3rd quarter and 21 points in the 4th quarter.
The 2nd half scoring run began on the Ducks’ third possession where De’Anthony Thomas returned a punt 38 yards to the the Oregon 38 yard line. The first play of the drive saw Redshirt Freshman QB Marcus Mariota hook up with Colt Lyerla on a 35 yard pass play. The 3rd and final play of the drive was a one yard read option hand off/keep that saw Mariota hold on to the ball past the mesh point and Lyerla hold on to it as well while backing into the end zone. Probably one of the more interesting plays you’ll see, but a touchdown nonetheless. That drive lasted a total of 29 seconds covering 38 yards. Oregon is fast!
The 4th quarter scoring was highlighted by 2 “pick sixes.” The first coming from Ifo Ekpre-Olomu who returned an interception 54 yards for a score. The second coming from Troy Hill who returned his INT 29 yards for the touchdown.
This shutout performance vaulted the Ducks to #2 in the AP Poll behind Alabama. Oregon has shown that they are indeed one of the best teams in the country. They’re much improved on defense with strength in their front seven and speed and cover skills in the secondary. No doubt they learned something when losing the BCS National Championship game to Auburn. They continue to add pieces and make adjustment that they hope will be the answer to taking down an SEC opponent should they make it back to the National Championship game this year. I suspect they will and they’ll find a way to pull it out this time! Go Ducks!
