2013 Results: 11-2 2nd in the East (6-2); won the Capital One Bowl over Wisconsin
2013 Highlight: 6 game win streak to end the season and earn a 3rd straight 11 win season.
2013 Lowlight: Another loss to Georgia and a bad loss to Tennessee that cost them a spot in the SEC Championship game.
2014 Outlook: The Ole Ball coach finds his team in the top 10 to start the season and they get the privilege of hosting the first game ever televised on the SEC Network. Spurrier seems to have the Gamecocks program rolling despite having only one SEC championship game appearance in 2010. This year’s team doesn’t have some of the big names of the past, but they will be looking to be in the race for the championship.
Biggest Issue to Solve: Secondary. More specifically cornerback. The Gamecocks lost both starting corners from last year’s team. And to help mitigate those damages they’ve move safety Brison Williams to corner. They still may end up playing as many as 3 true freshmen at corner this season.
Key Players: QB Dylan Thompson, RB Mike Davis, DT J.T. Surratt, OG AJ Cain and CB Brison Williams
Most Important Game: September 13th vs. Georgia; this has become a broken record at this point. If the Gamecocks want to win the East they must beat Georgia.
Media Prediction (SEC finish): 1st SEC East
My Prediction (SEC finish): 2nd SEC East (6-2)
My Overall Record Prediction: 10-2
Why?: I see another early season loss to Georgia keeping South Carolina out of this year’s SEC Championship game. But if they can somehow avoid the historic 2nd SEC loss they could potentially get in if Georgia isn’t as good as I think they are. Watch out for the potential of Spurrier’s return to the Swamp on Nov. 15th to be that second loss.
